Description
The advent of high-throughput technologies in molecular biology has dramatically increased our understanding of breast cancer during the past decade, including a somewhat unanticipated awareness of enormous molecular diversity between and within tumors [1–5]. In turn, this knowledge has had a large impact on priorities in translational research which, hopefully, will bring us closer to truly effective individualized therapy [6]. Two articles in this issue of Breast Cancer Research and Treatment—one by Smid et al. [7] and the other by Tran-Thanh et al. [8]—provide interesting and potentially important new insights into the prognosis and progression of breast cancer, based on highresolution analyses of changes in gene copy number.
