Description
In order to establish haematological reference intervals in the genus Tupinambis, blood samples were taken from the ventral coccygeal vein from 100 specimens of Tupinambis merianae and Tupinambis rufescens from Argentina. The samples were used to determine the haematocrit values, red blood cell count, total leukocyte and differential leukocyte count, thrombocyte count, mean corpuscular volume, haemoglobin concentration, mean corpuscular haemoglobin and mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration and these were compared between both species. Statistically significant differences were observed as functions of the species (p> 0.001); T. merianae appeared to have higher red blood cell counts, haematocrit and haemoglobin than T. rufescens. Conversely, T. rufescens showed statistically high values in leukocyte and thrombocyte counts compared to the other species of the genus.
