Description

Surgical site infection surveillance became mandatory for orthopaedic surgery in 1997 and is reported to the Health Protection Agency. The requirement is for all NHS Trusts to carry out a minimum of 3-month surveillance annually for at least one of either primary total hip replacements, total knee replacements, hip hemiarthroplasties, or open reduction and internal Wxation of long bone fractures. We audited all the acute NHS Trusts within our region to discover what form of surveillance they practised. We gathered data on whether the hospitals therein were monitoring infection rates, for which procedures, how often, and for how long. The results revealed that 94% of hospitals were monitoring and 50% were monitoring all year round; but only 35% were monitoring trauma cases and only 18% were monitoring after discharge from hospital. We recommend that monitoring should take place all year round, for one elective and one trauma procedure, and should continue for approximately 6 weeks post-operatively
