The Rational Unified Process (RUP) is an online knowledge base of proven software-development principles.
As a software engineering process, RUP provides a disciplined approach to assigning tasks and responsibilities within a development organization. Its goal is to ensure the production of high-quality software that meets the needs of its users, within a predictable schedule and budget. RUP captures many of the best practices in modern software development in a form that can be tailored to a wide range of projects and organizations. Many activities in RUP are supported by software-engineering tools. Tool Mentors describe how Rational® Software tools can be used to support particular steps and activities.
IBM® Rational Method Composer provides a process management platform with an extensive process library, including RUP, that enables you to provide customizable process guidance. For more information about process, see Requirements management process.
The Use-Case project template provides a basic project structure that is compliant with RUP. The project template provides requirement types, suggested attributes, default attribute values, and related document types.
Use the Help > Extended Help command to access the Rational Unified Process Tool Mentors and other information databases (including ones you create). Starting the Rational Extended Help from Rational RequisitePro allows you to get information about process and policy without interrupting your work flow. If you have RUP installed on your system, specific help topics from RUP appear in the Extended Help browser.
The information accessed from Rational Extended Help depends on the context from which it is invoked. For example, someone working on a use-case diagram in Rational Rose® will see different Extended Help information than someone working on a requirements document in Rational RequisitePro. In addition, you can customize Extended Help to include topics related to your own process or environment.
